24 Cypriot lawyers hired on a one-year temporary basis will help speed up refugee status applications and judicial appeals against refusals, according to the official Cypriot government portal.
Most of the funding for the project – €1.1 million, 90% of the total amount – will be provided by the EU fund for migration, asylum and integration.
As of the end of November 2020, 19,153 applications from refugee applicants were in the queue, including 4,280 from Syrian nationals.
In 2020, 137 applicants were granted political refugee status in Cyprus, a further 1,479 were granted temporary humanitarian status and 1,870 were denied either. In the case of Syrians, 23 were granted refugee status, 1,337 were granted humanitarian status and two were rejected.
