Late Sunday evening, December 13, there was an explosion in front of the entrance to the branch of the Cyta communications provider in the Ayia Fila neighborhood of Limassol, damaging the front door. Police arrived and found graffiti on the facade of the building that read “No 5G” and “This is resistance against 5G.”
According to law enforcement authorities, the cause of the explosion was an improvised device.
As a reminder, according to the directive of the European Union, Cyprus has to issue licenses for the creation of a network of telecommunication services of the fifth generation by the end of 2020.The company Cyta is one of the bidders. At the same time some residents of the country are against the installation of 5G antennas, considering them a source of increased radiation.
Shortly after the incident, Cyta’s office near the Hellenic Bank branch in Ayia Fila was blown up and a Molotov cocktail was thrown. A little later, unknown persons attempted, also with Molotov cocktails, to set fire to the main Christmas tree in Limassol on Anexartisias Street, but a private security guard hired by the mayor’s office successfully extinguished the fire.
Police are investigating whether there is a connection between the three incidents.
